Bistability of turbulent flow in open-channel expansion: Characterization and suppression

چکیده

Three-dimensional turbulent bistable flow (TBF) in an open-channel expansion is predicted using large eddy simulation. The free surface of TBF tracked the volume fluid method, coupled with level-set method. This paper aims to reveal ensemble-average characteristics and explore effective ways control bistability. For a given condition approaching expansion, either two stable states can possibly occur, depending on history. pressure field agrees well experimental data. velocity decomposed into deformation regions eddy-rotation Okubo–Weiss parameter. Turbulent eddies initiated by shear instability dominate those associated sidewall-friction force; this responsible for occurrence Fitting simple hump at flat-bottom way suppress presence shrinks cores breaks interaction between triggered instabilities induced friction forces; result increase uniformity turbulence, separation, vortex behavior.

On Coherent Structures of Turbulent Open-channel Flow Above a Rough Bed

Present study examines turbulent structures of a rough bed open-channel flow in the context of deterministic approach. Instantaneous velocity field is measured in different hydraulic conditions using two dimensional Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) in vertical plane and Stereoscopic PIV in horizontal plane. Different techniques and quantities such as swirl strength, two-point and cross-correlat...

Computational Modeling of Turbulent Velocity Structures for an Open Channel Flow Using Karhunen–loéve Expansion

This paper develops an analytical two-part covariance kernel from velocity correlations across a two-dimensional (vertical and flow directions) Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) flow field. This will form the basis of a model of wave action in flood water that includes the underlying turbulence velocity field using Karhunen–Loéve (KL) expansion. The PIV data was from the supercritical flow area ...

Assessment of Turbulent Models in Computation of Strongly Curved Open Channel Flows

Several rigorous turbulent models have been developed in the past years and it can be seen that more research is needed to reach a better understanding of their generality and precision by verifying their applications for distinct hydraulic phenomena; under certain assumptions. This survey evaluates the performance of Standard k-ε, Realizable k-ε, RNG k-ε, k-ω and RSM models in predicting flow ...

Shape Effects and Definition of Hydraulic Radius in Manning 's Equation in Open Channel Flow

In the Manning equation the hydraulic radius can be defined as the cross-section dimension of the shape. In pipe flow the bed shear stress is assumed to be uniformly distributed along the wetted perimeter which cannot be true in open channel flow. Hence, three approximation of the true boundary shear-stress distribution are examined and more practical conveyance depth or resistance radius formu...
